Rice grains vary widely. Mostly they weight 20-30 mg, although experimental breeding has produced them as large as 78 mg.So, let's use 25mg per grain. How much has been donated so far? Let's look at the totals:

How many people will this feed? As of right now, I don't have numbers to use to answer that. I'll try and figure that out later. If anyone has the answer, or disagrees with the rice grain weight used, let me know.

i think you need to convert this to metric tons so I can get an accurate gage on the amount of money sponsers have donated. I believe a current metric tone of rice goes for about 805 US dollars.
new high of about 59000000 in a day
damn, that's a lot of grains of rice. and wouldn't my figure have just converted roughly to 5.8 metric tons? so yeah, with all the sponsors this project seems to have, it doesn't appear that they've had to chip in very much. and the sponsors are fairly large companies - liz claiborne, toshiba, radisson, itunes, american express, macy's, fujitsu, time life, office depot, reader's digest, and apple. so if we assume that they are equally splitting the cost of the rice, they would each have to be chipping in about $425. of course, if the game continues to accelerate like this, who knows how much they'll end up "donating."
